Tanner Swanson Begins 2008 Race Season
Another season of racing has begun for 17 year old racing sensation Tanner Swanson. Tanner and the TK Motorsports team traveled to Roseville, CA for the first race of the USAC Western Sprints year. He is again driving the family owned #17 Reich Construction/Eagle/Chevy sprint car. Tanner shared driving duties in this car with his brother Kody last year while he was also competing in the USAC Ford Focus Carolina Series. He won the Championship of that series and was Rookie of the Year. This year he will be competing the entire season behind the wheel of the car In which his brother won the 2005 Championship .
Tanner's night at the All American Raceway in Roseville started out on a high note qualifying eight one hundredths of a second behind top qualifier Shane Hmiel from Pleasant Garden, NC. The first race of the night was the four lap Trophy Dash shootout where Tanner started third in the four car field. Tanner wheeled the #17 into third place on the first lap and into the lead on the third lap to win the first trophy dash of the season. In his10 lap heat race, Tanner started seventh and came home in fourth after passing three competitors.
The evenings main event began with an 8 car inversion putting Tanner in the seventh starting position on the inside of row 4. On lap 9 of the main the #60 Western Speed car of Chase Scott from Concord, NC had his left front wheel come off bringing out the yellow caution flag. On the ensuing restart car #7 of Snake Livernash of Spanaway, WA made contact with the #22 of Laura Hayes of Wilton, CA in turn #1 causing her to move up and clip the back wheel of Swanson's #17 causing him to spin into the turn #2 wall. While there was moderate damage to the back end of the #17 car it was determined that it was still in good enough shape to continue the race. Tanner buckled back into the car and restarted at the back of the field. On lap 16 another car lost a wheel. This time it was the #4X car of JoJo Helberg of Ronert Park, CA losing it in turn #4. Tanner had moved up to the 9th position in the race. The race then continued under the green flag to the full 50 laps of racing. Tanner had been picking cars off one at a time but he ran out of laps and had to settle for a respectable 4th place finish behind winner Shane Hmiel.
Thus Tanner Swanson begins the 2008 USAC Western Sprints season in 4th position 13 points behind series leader Shane Hmiel.
