Dave Steele of Tampa, Fla. captured Sunday's 20-mile King Soopers "Rocky Mountain Classic" USAC National/Western Midget Car race at Pikes Peak International Raceway in Fountain, Colo. He took the lead from Michael Lewis on the final lap of the race which was shortened from 30 to 20 miles due to afternoon rains and impending darkness.
Steele and his Nicholas Motorsports Mopar Beast/Mopar were trailed at the checkered flag by Bobby East, Lewis, J.J. Yeley and Ron Gregory.
East, who won the pole for the PPIR Midget race, continues to lead the National Midget standings going into Wednesday night's "Diversified Brokerage Insurance Group 100" presented by National City Bank at the Blossom Chevrolet Indianapolis Speedrome, part of the track's "Vogler Classic" events. A 100-lap feature is on tap at the 1/5-mile paved oval.
East is expected to be joined in the field for the Speedrome event by former National Midget Champ Dave Darland and new track record holder Billy Wease, who was the fastest qualifier for the race which was rained out on its original; date of May 27.
Johnny Rodriguez extended his lead in the USAC Western Midget Car Series standings with his 15th-place finish in the Pikes Peak race. The Western Midgets head for Bakersfield, Calif. for this Saturday night's races at Bakersfield Speedway.
