Schatz, Walker join Silver Crown team as March 20-23 "Copper World" features new "combos".
The 26th running of one of America's greatest racing weekends unfolds March 20-23 at Phoenix International Raceway in Arizona as the "Copper World Indy 200" showcases USAC's Weld Racing Silver Crown Championship Series and National/Western Midget Car Series in concert with the Indy Racing League.
Among new "combinations" planning to compete at Phoenix are two World of Outlaw veterans in RE Technologies Silver Crown team cars. Donny Schatz and Tyler Walker, both winners of two WoO features in 2002, have been announced as the drivers for the Memphis, Tenn.-based team.
Schatz, 25, of Minot, ND, has 13 career WoO victories to his credit, while Walker, 23, of Los Angeles, Calif., has four. Walker won the 2002 WoO Gumout Series title and Schatz finished seventh in the 2002 WoO standings.
The RE Technologies team debuted in USAC's Silver Crown series at Memphis in 2000 with World of Outlaws regular Greg Hodnett but failed to make the feature in their initial outing. In 2001 Jerry Coons, Jr. competed in 13 races and won the pole at DuQuoin, Ill. He scored second-place finishes at Springfield and DuQuoin, Ill and Indianapolis, Ind., all on the dirt, and was fifth in the final standings, earning the "Most Improved Driver" of the year award. Dave Darland also drove a team car at Indianapolis Raceway Park. In 2002, Coons finished eighth in the point standings and grabbed a pole at Syracuse, N.Y. in the season finale. He finished second at Springfield, Ill. and Syracuse. World of Outlaws veteran Sammy Swindell also drove an RE Technologies car in selected races and finished 17th at Richmond, Va.
A 100-mile USAC Weld Racing Silver Crown Championship race precedes Sunday's "Copper World Indy 200" IRL event on March 23, while the 25-mile USAC National Midget Car feature and a 100-mile Infinity Pro Series main event are slated for the Desert Mile on Saturday, March 22. Preliminaries begin with practice on Thursday, March 20 and continue on Friday, March 21.
Schatz and Walker will be trying to join an exclusive list of drivers who have won both USAC Silver Crown and World of Outlaws features during their career. That list includes Steve Kinser, Doug Wolfgang, Jack Hewitt, Jimmy Sills, Rick Hood, Jeff Swindell, Ron Shuman, Danny Smith, Kenny Jacobs, Keith Kauffman, Shane Carson and Lealand McSpadden.
Dave Blaney, winner of the pole position for yesterday's NASCAR Winston Cup race at Rockingham, N.C., is the only driver to claim championships in both USAC Silver Crown and World of Outlaws competition. He won the USAC title in 1984 and the WoO crown in 1995.
