Sleepy Tripp of Costa Mesa, Calif. recorded his 160th USAC feature victory Saturday night at the Bakersfield (Calif.) Speedway, winning the 30-lap MCI WorldCom Western Midget Car race in his DL Motorsports Esslinger. The win was his 104th in Western MCI WorldCom competition and he now trails Rich Vogler's all-time record total of 170 USAC wins by only 10. Tripp led the first 11 laps, then passed Alex Harris on the 21st lap and led the final 10 to beat series point leader Marc DeBeaumont, Bryan Stanfill, Bud Kaeding and Michael Kendall as Harris slipped to sixth at the finish. A.J. Johnson was the fastest qualifier but he was first out of the 30-lapper. DeBeaumont, who led three laps of Saturday night's Bakersfield race, now leads Shane Scully, who was 10th at Bakersfield, by 105 points going into this Wednesday night's race at Eagle Raceway in Lincoln, Neb. The USAC Western Sprint Cars will be joined by the MCI WorldCom TQ Midget Cars for Saturday night's Irwindale (CA) Speedway "doubleheader" after the TQs compete Thursday night at the Ventura (Calif.) Fairgrounds Raceway. A 30-lapper in on tap at Ventura, while a 20-lap TQ and 30-lap Sprint Car main are scheduled at Irwindale. Gene Godepski of Trenton, N.J. and Ron Wade of Wilmington, Calif. captured MCI WorldCom TQ Midget races last week, Godepski leading all 20 laps to win at Ventura on Tuesday night and Wade leading all 20 at Bakersfield Saturday. Trailing Godepski at Ventura were new series point leader Greg Edenholm, Jim Styer, West Evans and fast qualifier Dennis Hart. Edenholm posted his fourth consecutive runner-up finish in Saturday night's Bakersfield feature, ahead of Evans, Godepski and Steve Lambert. Edenholm was the fastest qualifier at Bakersfield.
