"COPPER WORLD" NEXT FOR MIDGETS NOV. 6; COONS GRABS TRI-CITY'S $15,000; SWEET TOPS PRELIMS
Jerry Coons Jr. and the Wilke-Pak Racers team from Milwaukee, Wisc. are $15,000 richer after Saturday night's victory in the inaugural DuPont "Gold Crown Midget Nationals" at Tri-City Speedway in Pontoon Beach, Ill. Coons ranks eighth in the series standings going into the November 6 "Copper World Classic" at Phoenix (Ariz.) International Raceway.
Coons, USAC's 2006-2007 Mopar National Midget Champion, drew the pole for Saturday's eight-car "dash," won that, started on the pole for the 50-lap feature and led every lap in his Future Electric/Speedway Motors Spike/Stanton Mopar. Brady Bacon finished second ahead of Cole Whitt, Brad Loyet and Brad Sweet. Saturday's race was co-sanctioned by USAC and POWRi.
Whitt's finish pared Tracy Hines' National Midget series point lead to 39 points going into the Phoenix race, the penultimate event of the 2008 calendar, which concludes with the November 27 "Turkey Night Grand Prix" at Toyota Speedway at Irwindale, Calif.
Sweet, of Grass Valley, Calif., swept to victory in preliminary 25-lap features at Tri-City Thursday and Friday nights. Sweet passed Whitt on lap seven Thursday and led the rest of the way to beat Hines, Brad Loyet, Shane Cottle and Whitt to the checkered flag. Sweet piloted the Kasey Kahne Racing Mopar/Team ASE Spike Speedway Mopar as he and Hines secured "locked in" spots for Saturday night's $15,000-to-win main event.
Sweet led the final four laps Friday. Coons and Dave Darland took second and third after battling for the lead throughout most of the race. Coons led laps 1-2, Darland 3-4, Coons 5-10, Darland 11-12, Coons 13-19 and Darland 20-21 before they finally yielded to Sweet. Chad Boat and Brad Kuhn rounded out the "top-five" at the checkered flag.
