CENTER LINE, Mich. - Championship driver Tony Stewart is scheduled to drive a Mopar midget car in Friday's USAC National Midget event at Madera (Calif.) Speedway. Stewart, a midget owner himself, will drive a Dino Tomassi Racing Enterprises Mopar in the inaugural Fred Gerhardt Open Wheel Classic.

"We teamed up with [Fred's son] Rick Gerhardt, who is the promoter of the race and the track," Tomassi said. "Tony sometimes drives Rick's sprint car, and Rick asked us if we'd be interested in preparing a midget car for Tony to run."

Stewart will race against his own driver, Jay Drake, who pilots the #71 Mopar midget car co-owned by Keith Kunz and Tony Stewart Racing Enterprises.

Tomassi driver Dave Steele will also challenge Stewart in the 7 p.m. race. "It should be great racing between Dave Steele and Tony Stewart: two high powered drivers," Tomassi said.

Fred Gerhardt, the innovator and legendary Indianapolis 500 owner, passed away nearly three years ago. Friday's 100-lap event in his honor will start 33 cars, three-abreast (Indy-style), on the 1/3-mile paved circuit.
