8-race Valvoline "Indiana Sprint Week" opens Friday.
Valvoline "Indiana Sprint Week" opens Friday night at Gas City I-69 Speedway, kicking off an eight-race slate of events in 10 days for USAC Stoops Freightliner series competitors. Saturday night's venue is Lincoln Park Speedway in Putnamville, Ind., while Sunday night's race is at Tri-State Speedway in Haubstadt and Monday night's race is at Twin Cities Raceway Park in North Vernon.
Dave Steele of Tampa, Fla. and Jason McCord of Anderson, Ind. captured Stoops Freightliner victories in weekend action on the pavement but Tracy Hines continues to lead the series standings after finishes of third and fourth respectively.
Steele wheeled his Northside Propane/Eagle Jet International Gaerte/Beast to victory in Friday night's "Hemelgarn Racing Night" 30-lapper at the Toledo Speedway, leading the final 10 laps after passing Brian Tyler. Tyler, winner of last year's Toledo race, led the first 20 laps and finished second ahead of Hines, Ed Carpenter and Derek Davidson. Steele's victory also secured an IRL test with the Hemelgarn Racing Team as part of his prize package.
McCord notched his second consecutive Indianapolis Raceway Park victory in Saturday night's 30-lapper at the .686-mile paved oval, leading all 30 laps in his Hat World/Lids Gaerte/Beast. Steele pressured McCord in the late stages of the race but finished second ahead of J.J. Yeley, Hines and Carpenter.
Steele and Hines were the respective Turbines, Inc. fast qualifiers at the weekend races, Steele recording a new track record of over 119 mph. at the resurfaced Toledo 1/2-mile.
Practice times for the Valvoline "Indiana Sprint Week" races at Gas City, Putnamville and North Vernon are 6 pm, with qualifying at 6:30 and racing at 7:30. Sunday night's "Thrifty Nickel Publications" Haubstadt events get under way with practice at 5:30, qualifying at 6 and racing at 7. All feature events are 30 laps.
Dave Darland is the defending Valvoline "Indiana Sprint Week" Champion and also won the title in 1998. Other "Indiana Sprint Week" champs include Kevin Thomas (1992, 1993, 1995 & 1996), Jay Drake (2000), Tony Elliott (1999), J.J. Yeley (1997), Kelly Kinser (1994), Bob Kinser (1991), Chuck Amati (1989-90), Gray Trammell (1990 with Amati) and Randy Kinser (1988).
