Bobby East of Brownsburg, Ind. sped to victory in back-to-back USAC Valvoline National Sprint Car races Friday and Saturday nights at Toledo, Ohio and Indianapolis, Ind.
USAC's 17th Valvoline "Indiana Sprint Week" kicks off this Thursday night at North Vernon, with seven races slated in 10 nights. Thirty-lap feature events are on tap at all seven tracks, with J.J. Yeley the defending series titlist.
Twin Cities Raceway Park hosts the opener, followed by Friday night's race at Gas City I-69 Speedway. Saturday night's race is at Lincoln Park Speedway in Putnamville, while Sunday night's race is at Tri-State Speedway in Haubstadt. Ensuing events are at the Lawrenceburg Speedway (July 22), Bloomington Speedway (July 23) and Terre Haute Action Track (July 24).
East was involved in a first-lap spin at Toledo, but recovered to come from the back of the pack to take the lead from Eric Gordon on lap 33. Trailing East's Klatt Enterprises Powerstroke Diesel/Ford Beast/Ford to the checkered flag were Brian Tyler, Eric Gordon, Jason McCord and Bud Kaeding. Kaeding led the first eight laps and Gordon led the next 24.
East then repeated the stunning performance at Indianapolis Raceway Park on Saturday night, leading the final 22 laps of the 30-lap contest. Tyler again finished second, ahead of Marc Jessup, Dave Steele and Jay Drake. McCord led five laps and Michael Lewis led three before East took over.
Despite an early tangle at Toledo which relegated him to the sidelines, Drake emerged from the two races with a comfortable point lead over Kaeding going into the upcoming seven Valvoline "Indiana Sprint Week" races.
