Defending Stoops Freightliner Sprint Car Champion Tony Elliott of Kokomo, Ind. geared up for this Saturday night's 31st "Tony Hulman Classic" at the Terre Haute (Ind.) Action Track with his 22nd career victory in Sunday night's 30-lap feature event at Tri-State Speedway in Haubstadt, Ind.

Elliott caught pole starter J.J. Yeley on lap five and led the rest of the way in his Stealth/Hoosier/KECO/Lamers machine to beat Yeley, Dave Darland, Levi Jones and Bill Rose to the checkered flag. The win left Elliott 18 points behind Dave Darland in third in the 2001 Stoops Freightliner series standings, with Yeley second, only 15 back of Darland.

Elliott has never won the "Tony Hulman Classic," which will unfold for the 31st time Saturday at Terre Haute's 1/2-mile dirt oval. Darland won the "Tony Hulman Classic" in 1993 and Yeley won it in 1997.

Practice at Terre Haute gets under way at 6:30 pm and qualifying starts at 7. The first race gets the green flag at 8.

Kevin Briscoe posted the Turbines, Inc. fast qualifying time at Haubstadt and Jonathan Vennard won the "qualifying race." Heats went to Tracy Hines, Dickie Gaines, Eric Davis and Greg Dillion and Yeley won the semi. <pre> STOOPS FREIGHTLINER USAC SPRINT CAR SERIES STANDINGS
