Snider eyes USAC Silver Crown record at Terre Haute.
Jason Leffler of Long Beach, Calif. will try to give car owner George Snider of Bakersfield, Calif. a record-tying 14th USAC Silver Crown Series victory in this Saturday night's "Sumar Classic" at the Terre Haute (Ind.) Action Track.
The Weld Racing Silver Crown Series event at the 1/2-mile dirt track is being presented by Terre Haute First National Bank, Clabber Girl Corporation and the Terre Haute Convention & Visitors Bureau and Leffler is trailing point leader Dave Steele by 20 points going into the program which starts with practice at 5:30 pm and qualifying at 6:30. A 15-lap "qualifying race" at 7:30 precedes the 100-lap "Sumar Classic."
Leffler presented Snider with victory #13 at the Indiana State Fairgrounds last Friday night, winning the Golden "Hoosier Hundred" at the 1-mile dirt oval. It was Leffler's first dirt-track Silver Crown victory to go with five on pavement, but left Snider just one shy of all-time leader Bob Hampshire in terms of car entrant victories in the series.
Hampshire's last win came with Jack Hewitt in the 1991 "4-Crown Nationals" at the Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio and Bob no longer fields a car in the series. Snider, on the other hand, has recorded eight wins in the past five seasons with drivers Tony Stewart, Mike Bliss, Jimmy Sills, J.J. Yeley and Leffler. George recorded his first win in his own car at Milwaukee in 1988 and repeated at Sacramento, Calif. in 1989 and Indianapolis Raceway Park in 1990. His 13 wins have come on eight different tracks!
Snider is the second car owner to challenge for the all-time lead in USAC car owner victories in 2002. The Dynamics, Inc. Hoffman Auto Racing Team of Milford, Ohio already caught and surpassed Steve Stapp as the all-time leader in the Stoops Freightliner Sprint Car Series and Steve Lewis is hopeful of catching Doug Caruthers' all-time USAC National Midget record this year as well.
Leffler, who was also leading at Nazareth, Pa. before rains halted that scheduled 100-miler prior to the halfway mark, will set his sights on Brad Noffsinger's 1-lap track record of 88.408 mph (20.360 seconds) after winning the pole for both the Nazareth and Indianapolis events.
