TOUGH NIGHT AT TERRE HAUTE
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- The Carl Edwards/ R.E. Technologies Racing team rolled into Terre Haute with momentum from Thursday night's podium finish but difficult track conditions at the Terre Haute Action Track Saturday night made for a long night. The team was off to a fast start early as Jerry Coons Jr. turned a time of 20.264, good for second quick in the practice session. USAC Silver Crown Rookie Ricky Stenhouse Jr. turned a time of 20th quick in his first time on the ½ mile dirt oval.
When it came time to qualify, Coons and Stenhouse drew a lower qualifying slot. The position did not bother the Arizona native as he turned a time good for 4th quick. Ricky Stenhouse who was still learning the track was forced to the non-qualifier race. The young rookie finished 6th earning himself a 20th starting position.
When the green flag dropped on the First Financial Bank Sumar Classic 100, Jerry Coons made his move to the front running in 3rd. Meanwhile, Ricky Stenhouse Jr. was attempting to navigate the blinding dust. On lap 9, a multicar accident took out the Olive Branch, Mississippi native when a car drove over Stenhouse's right rear tire damaging the No. 35's suspension ending and his night.
When the green flag dropped again, Coons made a move for the front but was involved in an incident on lap 15 that sent the No. 199 to the pits for repairs. The Carl Edwards/ R.E. Technologies team immediately went to work on the car to repair the major damage. Several laps later, the hard work of the crew paid off as the No. 199 returned to the track to finish 17th and salvage what would have been a bad night in the owner's points chase. The team left Terre Haute 5th in points trailing the No. 26 Sam Pierce entry by one point. Coons and Stenhouse were not the only ones involved in accidents as there were nineteen yellow flags and two red flags during the evening. Bud Kaeding won the event.
