Ronnie Clark of Tucson, Ariz. and Dean Freitas of Kapolei, Hawaii recorded feature victories in the inaugural "Hawaiian USAC Southwest Sprint Car Classic" at Hawaii Motor Speedway near Pearl Harbor Friday night and Sunday afternoon. Sunday's event was necessitated when rains forced postponement of Saturday night's scheduled racing program.

The two races marked USAC's debut in the Aloha State and featured stars of USAC's Southwest Sprint Car Series and local Hawaii dirt-track sprint car regulars.

Clark won Friday night's 30-lapper on the 1/4-mile dirt track located in Ewa Beach, Hawaii. He took the lead on lap 25 when Southwest Sprint Car Champion Rick Ziehl tangled with David Burns. Trailing Clark at the checkered flag were Brandon Lane, Mike Martin, Albert Ternora, Jr. and Mike Boat.

Freitas also caught Ziehl on the 20th lap of Sunday's 40-lapper and led the rest of the way to beat Ziehl, Clark, Lane and Bruce St. James.

Ziehl posted the fastest qualifying time for both events. Ziehl, Lane and Freitas won Friday heats, while Freitas won Friday's dash and Clark won Sunday's dash.

Drivers Beau Binder and Brandon Tonora flipped during Friday's program but both escaped injury.

A capacity crowd enjoyed the two USAC "special events," presented by Pacific Air Cargo, who transported the race cars to the islands.
