EDEN RECEIVES KARA HENDRICK SPIRIT AWARD

INDIANAPOLIS -- Sondi Eden of Crawfordsville, Ind., USAC's only female driving champion, was announced Thursday as the winner of the Kara Hendrick Spirit Award at the University of Indianapolis Schwitzer Student Center.

The award, presented by USAC President/CEO Rollie Helmling, was given during the third Women's in the Winner's Circle luncheon to benefit the Lyn St. James Foundation.

Eden, who was unable to attend the luncheon, was in Martinsville, Va. testing cars for Roush Racing's driver search at Martinsville Speedway. Eden has competed in several disciplines of auto racing, including Silver Crown, Sprint and Midget cars, as well as mini-sprints and go-karts during her early career. Eden scored last season's USAC Speedrome Midget Car Series championship, and on July 23, 2005 at The Milwaukee Mile became the fourth female driver to compete in a Silver Crown car.

Eden accepted the award during Thursday's pre-race festivities leading up to the "J.D. Byrider 100" Silver Crown race at Indianapolis Raceway Park.

Hendrick was a spirited USAC midget driver who started her career in quarter midgets. She moved up through the ranks to a full-sized midget and in 1991 set the track record at Cajon Speedway in El Cajon, Calif. Hendrick was fatally injured later that night, but her spirit, attitude and talent continue to be recognized.

The mission of the Lyn St. James Foundation is to provide leadership, vision, resources, and financial support in order to create an open environment for women's growth in automotive fields. The foundation focuses on worldwide activities and programs for automotive safety and driver development, especially for women who aspire to become racecar drivers.
