Lake Buena Vista, FL - January 16, 1998---New Winston Cup driver Kenny Irwin, Jr led the qualifying today at the Walt Disney World Speedway placing his #28 Sliver Crown car on the pole for tomorrow's 50 mile race. He is joined on the front row by Robby Flock.
When asked if Robert Yates had any concerns about his driving a Silver Crown car this weekend, Irwin said, "I told Robert where I was going and what I was going to do. He didn't tell me not to." He also said that this will most likely be his last time in an open wheel car because of the rigors of the Winston Cup schedule. Irwin says that the Silver Crown cars are harder to drive than the WC cars, and he still enjoys them.
Robby Flock in his first race since his accidnet last year, said that he had no problems driving, but since he was in a new car there was still a lot of work to do before he could get the most out of it. He is driving a new Dan Drinan chassis. Drinan is helping the team get the car dialed in.
Others in the top ten are: Jason Leffler, Dave Steele, Jim Keeker, Chuck Leary, Chet Fillip, Russ Gamester, Jimmy Sills and Brian Tyler. Pennsylvania driver, John Heydenreich, qualified in the eleventh spot improving on two very disappointing practice sessions in which he did not break the top 30.
Davey Hamilton, Gene Lee Gibson, Mike Bliss, Dave Darland (1997 Sliver Crown Champion), Jack Hewitt, Wally Pankratz and Bently Warren all are safely in the feature. Those who did not qualify in the top 24 include Jac Haudenschild, Tracy Hines, Chuck Gurney, and Lou Cicconi, Jr. They will attempt to make the field in a qualifying race before the feature on Saturday.
