No less than a half-dozen drivers are expected to do "triple duty" when USAC's three National racing series convene April 19-21 at the Nazareth (Pa.) Speedway for the Firestone Indy 225 weekend activities.
The event marks the first time all three USAC National series have competed on pavement in the same program. Twenty-five mile features are scheduled on Saturday, April 20 for the Stoops Freightliner Sprint Cars and the National Midget Cars, while the 100-mile Weld Racing Silver Crown feature is scheduled Sunday prior to the Firestone Indy 225 for the Indy Racing League.
Brothers A.J. and Aaron Fike of Galesburg, Ill., defending Sprint Car Champion J.J. Yeley of Phoenix, Ariz., defending National Midget Car Champion Dave Darland of Lincoln, Ind., Silver Crown and Midget Car point leader Dave Steele of Tampa, Fla. and former Silver Crown Champion Tracy Hines of New Castle, Ind. are each entered in all three series.
Other Nazareth entrants of note include defending Silver Crown Champion Paul White of Temple, Texas, plus former USAC Champions Kasey Kahne, Mike Bliss and Jason Leffler, plus World of Outlaws star Sammy Swindell, Indy-Car veteran Jimmy Kite and NASCAR and Indy-car veteran P.J. Jones.
The "local" contingent will also be well represented at Nazareth, including Pennsylvania drivers John Heydenreich, Ray Bull and Randy Mausteller of Bloomsburg, Brian Paulus of Mechanicsburg, Rich Tobias, Jr. of Annville, Tom Capie of Trevose, Nick Fornoro, Jr. of Stroudsburg, Fred Schell of Phoenixville, Frank Fiore, Jr. of Dallastown, Michael Roselli, Jr. of Brodheadsville and Travis Miniea of West Middlesex.
James Chesson of Far Hills, N.J. is also expected to garner a share of the headlines after his third-place finish in the "Copper World Classic" Midget race at Phoenix, Ariz. in March. He will compete in both the Silver Crown and Midget Car events at Nazareth.
The Nazareth timetable includes practice for all three series and qualifications for Midget Cars and Sprint Cars on Friday; Silver Crown qualifying and a "qualifying race" and Sprint Car and Midget Car "qualifying races" and features on Saturday; and the 100-lap Silver Crown feature on Sunday. Saturday's first USAC feature starts at 2:30 pm and Sunday's Silver Crown feature gets the green flag at 10:30 am.
