COONS, HINES, JONES BATTLE FOR USAC's SUPER LICENSE; ONLY 9 POINTS APART WITH ONE RACE LEFT!!

The closest race in USAC this season has been for USAC's coveted "Super License," a free license for 2009 offered to the driver scoring the most points in USAC's National feature events during 2008. That includes all three National series, the K & N Silver Crown Series presented by Optima Batteries, the National Sprint Car Series and the Mopar National Midget Series.

Going into the final event, the "Turkey Night Grand Prix" Midget race at Toyota Speedway at Irwindale, Calif. November 27, three drivers are unbelievably separated by just nine points! A total of 66 points are available at Irwindale!

Jerry Coons Jr. of Tucson, Ariz. leads the list with 2,343 points, while Tracy Hines of New Castle, Ind. has 2,337 and Levi Jones of Brownsburg, Ind. has 2,334. That's after 61 total races!

This is the closest "Super License" battle in the nine-year history of the award. In 2002 Hines won by 25 points, while J.J. Yeley won in 2001 by 70, in 2002 by 252 and in 2003 by 602. Jay Drake won in 2004 by 300 points, while Josh Wise was the 2005 champ by 411 and the 2006 champ by 210. Last year Coons won by 62.

The 98-lap "Turkey Night Grand Prix" Midget race will determine this year's "Super License" champion, who will receive his award at USAC's 53rd "Night of Champions" annual banquet January 9 at the Indiana Roof Ballroom in downtown Indianapolis, Ind.
