"COPPER WORLD CLASSIC" NEXT FOR MIDGETS 11/12 AT PIR; RAINS FORCE PONTOON BEACH CANCELLATION

The torrid battle for the 2009 USAC Mopar National Midget Championship will be decided in races at Phoenix, Ariz. and Irwindale, Calif. in November.

Three drivers separated by just 35 points will tackle the mile paved Phoenix International Raceway November 12 in the "Copper World Classic," then venture to Toyota Speedway at Irwindale November 26 for the "Turkey Night Grand Prix" finale. Brad Kuhn of Avon, Ind. sits atop the standings, 14 ahead of Brad Sweet of Grass Valley, Calif. and 35 ahead of Darren Hagen of Riverside, Calif. Two-time series champion Jerry Coons Jr. of Tucson, Ariz. is 95 back of the leader.

Heavy rains in the St. Louis area forced cancellation of last weekend's scheduled DuPont "Gold Crown Midget Nationals" at Tri-City Speedway in Pontoon Beach, Ill. Track and USAC officials are discussing dates in early 2010 for a signature event at the 3/8-mile dirt oval.
