Waters Opens Defense Of Rocky Mountain Title in Saturday's Port O' Call Sprint At Salt Lake City

Jim Waters of Salt Lake City, Utah opens defense of his 2003 USAC Rocky Mountain Port O' Call Sprint Car championship this Saturday as the 2004 series kicks off at Rocky Mountain Raceways in the Utah capital.

Waters won twice on his way to last year's title and added eight other "top-10" finishes in 11 starts to beat Jimmy Wysong by 46 points.

Wysong and Dave Fitzgerald gave Salt Lake City a 1-2-3 sweep in the final 2003 standings and are expected to be among top threats to Waters in 2004.

Other 2003 Rocky Mountain feature winners included Jeff and Mark Bergener of Taylorsville and Kearns, Utah respectively, plus Western Sprint stars Rick Hendrix, Tony Hunt and Michael Lewis.

A 40-lap feature is slated on the 3/8-mile paved oval.
