Salem, IN - Unlike Saturday in the Silver Crown's "Tony Bettenhausen 100", Ryan Newman's luck would fare mildly better on Sunday. Newman would qualify in the 2nd position, just five one-hundredths off the pole in the USAC Stoops Freightliner Sprint Car Series. Newman's time would be three tenths faster than the 3rd fastest car. After experiencing some trouble in the feature, Newman would make his way back up to the front and finish in 2nd place in the "Joe James/Pat O'Connor Classic" at Salem Speedway.

Newman would start the feature race in 5th place. He made his way up to 2nd steadily. After running over some debris, Ryan's right front tire blew and he was forced to pit to replace it. Restarting 10th, Newman was able to come back up through the field and gain back his 2nd place position within 14 laps.

"Overall, it was a decent day. I'm happy we put on a good show for the fans. It makes me feel good to do something like that when the announcers are playing it up so much, especially in my home state," Newman comments.

Newman is currently the leader in the USAC Silver Bullet Silver Crown Series and 2nd in points in the USAC MCI WorldCom Midget Series standings.

Newman's next race is this weekend in the USAC MCI WorldCom Midget Series at Pikes Peak International Raceway. This race will be broadcast on TV with a date to yet be announced. Ryan will also be racing the Midget race at Terre Haute on September 1st. This race will be telecast live on ESPN2 at 8pm EST.
