Drake ends dry spell, wins at Joliet.

Jay Drake of Val Verde, Calif., who tied the all-time record for USAC feature victories in a single season two years ago, ended a USAC dry spell of more than a year by winning Saturday night's 30-lap Stoops Freightliner Sprint Car feature at Route 66 Raceway in Joliet, Ill. He led all 30 laps to give his Hannig Construction Jones/Stealth team its first victory of 2002.

The win solidified Drake's fourth-place ranking in the series which now prepares for the September 20-21 "4-Crown Nationals" at the Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio. Jay's last USAC National feature victory came in last year's "Indiana Sprint Week" race at Tri-State Speedway in Haubstadt, Ind.

Bud Kaeding, in his first series appearance since recovering from May injuries, finished second, ahead of Turbines, Inc. fast qualifier J.J. Yeley, series point leader Tracy Hines and Boston Reid.

Tony Elliott, Todd Chandler, Reid and Jerry Coons, Jr. won heats and Levi Jones took the semi.

Hines emerged from the race with a 27-point lead over Yeley going into the Eldora Speedway events.
