Bergener family (Mark) scores again at Salt Lake

The 2003 USAC/SLVRA Port-O-Call Rocky Mountain Sprint Car Series is looking like a "family" affair, with Mark Bergener claiming Saturday night's 40-lap feature event at Rocky Mountain Raceways in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Bergener, whose brother Jeff won the previous two series events, passed his brother on lap seven and led the rest of the way in his ABC Chassis Chevy. Jeff finished second ahead of Jim Waters, Mel Andrus and series point leader Dave Fitzgerald.

Mark Bergener, one of four racing Bergener brothers, is a former SLVRA "Rookie of the Year" but is not currently in the "top-10" in series standings, while Fitzgerald emerged from Saturday's race with a 23-point lead over Jim Waters going into a July 12 race at Rocky Mountain Raceways.

John Waters was Saturday night's fastest qualifier, while Paul Marconi and Jim Waters won the preliminary heat races. <pre> USAC/SLVRA PORT-O-CALL ROCKY MOUNTAIN SPRINT CAR SERIES STANDINGS 1.
