Newman Coming Up All Aces at Winchester
Winchester, IN - Ryan Newman made this weekend all one's, unlike last week where he was seeing all two's. Newman qualified in 1st place, in addition to setting a new track record at the half-mile facility. Newman would win his heat race and carry on the momentum by winning the 30-lap feature event of the USAC Stoops Freightliner Sprint Car series at Winchester Speedway.
Newman would start the feature race in 6th place, due to the inversion of the top six qualifiers. He made his way up to 2nd steadily. On lap 22, a caution was flown. On the restart, Newman was passed by another competitor. Ryan was able to retake the position and try to close in on the leader. After taking the white flag, it seemed Newman would wind up in the 2nd position. When the field came back around, the red flag was shown and the leader was disqualified for a fuel cell leaking. This moved Ryan up to the top spot where he would remain for the final two laps.
Newman admitted it wasn't easy. "The track was really slick because he was leaking fuel in the groove. I was just trying to hang on. I knew we were faster than he was, but he already had a half lap lead on us before they flew the red (flag). It was a wild experience. I was definitely lucky, but I sure don't like to win like that. "
Newman will try to keep the momentum going when he returns to USAC Stoops Freightliner Sprint Series at Salem Speedway in the "Joe James/Pat O'Connor Classic" on August 22nd. Newman will race the previous night, August 21st, at the Illinois State Fairgrounds in Springfield, IL for the USAC Coors Light Silver Bullet Silver Crown Series race.
