Team Mopar's season ends with two top-ten finishes
Team Mopar wrapped up the 2004 racing season on Thanksgiving night with two top-10 finishes in the 64th Annual Turkey Night Grand Prix at Irwindale Speedway. Wilke-PAK's Tracy Hines and Nicholas Motorsports' Kyle Nicholas took the checkered flag at the California racktrack in third and tenth positions respectively after a hard-fought 100-lap battle.
Hines, who had qualified third, worked his way through the field to take the podium finish behind the wheel of the No. 11 machine. Nicholas, in his USAC National Midget Series debut, battled through the second qualifying race to put himself solidly in the field. The 16-year-old stayed out of trouble to work his way to a top-10 finish in the No. 02. His teammate, Dave Steele, qualified the No. 2 Nicholas Motorsports machine in fourth position. He rode in as high as fourth position before contact with another car sent him into the wall in turn two. The accident retired the former event champion for the evening, but fortunately, Steele was not hurt.
Josh Wise and the No. 20 Tony Stewart Racing Enterprises team wrapped up the runner-up position in the USAC National Midget Series points race, but the No. 20 was unable to start the feature event after a hung throttle caused Wise to hit the wall during his qualifying run. Wise was unhurt, but the No. 20 machine was retired for the evening. Wise's teammate and team owner Tony Stewart also competed in the event, but an ignition problem took the No. 20s machine out of contention during the second qualifying race.
Stewart also competed in the USAC Western States Sprint Car event in his No. 20 machine, which sported a signature "Mopar Flying Turkey" paint scheme for the race. Qualifying in fourth position, Stewart worked his way through the field early. But contact with another car caused the No. 20 to loop between turns one and two, ending Stewart's evening prematurely.
Team Mopar ended the 2004 USAC National Midget Series season solidly, with Wise earning the series' runner-up honors. He was followed by Steele in seventh position, Wilke-PAK's Davey Ray in eighth and Teddy Beach in 10th. The Wilke-PAK Motorsports team captured second place in the Entrant Points chase, while Tony Stewart Racing Enterprises earned a third-place finish.
The 2005 USAC National Midget Car Series season will begin January 29-30, with the Copper World Classic in Phoenix, Arizona.
