USAC Triple Crown Champion J.J. Yeley of Phoenix, Ariz. scored a sensational victory in Saturday afternoon's "Milwaukee Mile 30" USAC National Midget race at the famed 1-mile paved Wisconsin oval. He emerged from a three-way duel with Dave Steele and Bobby East with a half-car length victory in the Steve Lewis ASE/Ford Beast/Pink Ford.
Yeley won the pole for the 30-mile race on Friday with a speed of 127.384 mph but trailed teammate East and Steele for the first seven circuits. Steele led laps eight to 13, then he and Yeley engaged in a spectacular duel for the lead which lasted until the checkered flag!
The National Midget Car Series is gearing up for Tuesday night's "Mid-Summer Midget Classic" at Eagle Raceway in Lincoln, Neb., which will be followed by Friday and Saturday night's 27th Bud Racing "Belleville Midget Nationals" at the Belleville (Kans.) High Banks. A 40-lap feature is on tap at Lincoln, while a 25-lapper awaits on Friday at Belleville, to be followed by Saturday's 40-lapper on the Belleville 1/2-mile. The USAC Ford Focuses compete on the Belleville 1/4-mile dirt on Thursday night, with a 100-lap feature slated.
The final half of the Milwaukee race featured Steele's charges into turns one and three which yielded various results, sometimes producing the race lead. He led lap 15 and lap 23, but Yeley led the rest, including the important last lap, although most laps ended with the two nearly side-by-side at the start/finish line and East in hot pursuit.
Trailing Yeley and Steele at the finish were National point leader East, Tracy Hines and Ron Gregory.
USAC's Western Midget Car Series is also impacted by this week's Lincoln and Belleville races, with full points awarded for both series.
Hines won last year's Lincoln feature, while Josh Wise is the defending champion of the "Belleville Midget Nationals."
