Yeley breaks USAC record with Lawrenceburg win
Faces Stewart challenge at Granite City Wednesday
J.J. Yeley of Phoenix, Ariz. broke a USAC record with Sunday's night's victory in the 30-lap USAC National Midget Car race at the Lawrenceburg (Ind.) Speedway. This Wednesday night he'll try to beat his USAC Silver Crown and Sprint Car owner Tony Stewart in the "DuPont Automotive Finishes Midget Classic" at Tri-City Speedway in Granite City, Ill.
Yeley earned his 10th USAC feature victory of the 2003 campaign at Lawrenceburg, the earliest any driver has recorded 10 USAC feature wins in a single season! The previous record was June 5 by Sleepy Tripp in 1988. Yeley will now aim at Tripp's July 16 record for 15 USAC wins (also set in 1988), and could eventually challenge the all-time USAC single-season record of 19 total feature victories set by Tripp (1988), A.J. Foyt (1964) and Jay Drake (2000).
Wednesday night, the USAC National Midget Series returns to the site of one of Yeley's 2002 victories, the 1/2-mile dirt Tri-City Speedway. Among entrants for the night's racing program is NASCAR Winston Cup Champion and USAC Triple Crown Champion Tony Stewart, making his second USAC appearance of the year!
Drivers will be aiming at the track record of 20.830 seconds set last year by lady driver Sarah McCune, who broke a 12-year-old mark of Jeff Gordon's. The feature event will be 30 laps.
Yeley was Sunday night's fastest Lawrenceburg qualifier and emerged the race leader when Shane Hollingsworth slid over the track lip on lap 23. Yeley led the final eight laps in his Steve Lewis ASE/Ford Beast/Pink Ford to beat Jerry Coons, Jr., Bobby East, A.J. Fike and Billy Wease. Hollingsworth led the opening lap, but Jay Drake led the next 18 before yielding back to Hollingsworth.
Yeley's series point lead stands at 17 over youthful Bobby East going into the Granite City race.
