Jay Drake of Val Verde, Calif. captured Sunday's "Glen Niebel Classic" 50-lap MCI WorldCom National Midget Car feature and emerged as the new series point leader as a result. Drake, who won the previous night's "Don Branson/Jud Larson Classic" Stoops Freightliner Sprint Car race at Rossburg, Ohio, trailed Ted Hines for 32 laps, then led the final 18 laps in his Ralph's Muffler & Brake Shops Gaerte/Stealth. Kasey Kahne of Enumclaw, Wash., who has won the last three USAC MCI WorldCom Western Midget Car events, posted the fastest qualifying time of the 43 cars on hand, then raced to second place in the 50-lap race but was unable to catch Drake in the closing laps. Ted Hines took third, followed by Dane Carter and Jimmy McCune at the checkered flag. Heat winners included Michael Roselli, Jr., Nick Fornoro, Jr., Tony Elliott and Dave Darland and Ryan Scott won the semi. The MCI WorldCom National Midget Car Series now prepares for their debut appearance at the Hartford (MI) Speedway on Friday night, April 28.
