Kahne goes for 3-in-a-row in "Night Before 500" Midgets.

Kasey Kahne of Enumclaw, Wash. will try to become the first driver in 40 years to claim back-to-back-to-back "Night Before the 500" Midget Classics on Saturday night, May 25, when the USAC National Midget Car Series returns to Indianapolis Raceway Park.

Kahne won the event the last two years, the first to do so since Jeff Gordon in 1990-91, and will try to match the feat accomplished by Jimmy Davies in 1960-61-62 with another triumph May 25.

Kasey will be part of a potent four-car Steve Lewis Racing entry which also includes defending USAC Sprint Car and Midget Car Champions J.J. Yeley and Dave Darland and 17-year-old phenom Bobby East, son of car builder Bob East.

The "Night Before the 500" tradition began in 1946 at the 16th Street Midget Speedway and has endured despite an occasional rainout. Although its history spans five different tracks, it has found its home at IRP since 1969 with the exception of 1972 and 1973 when it was contested at the Indiana State Fairgrounds and 1979 when it was held at the Indianapolis Speedrome.

It should be noted here that Shorty Templeman captured three feature events at the 16th Street Speedway in 1956, all of which comprised the "Night Before the 500" Classic.

Former race winners Dave Steele, Ted Hines and Mel Kenyon are also expected to compete in the race on the .686-mile paved oval.
