COONS LOOKS FOR A WIN AT HOOSIER HUNDRED
Memphis, Tenn. -- May 24, 2005 -- The R.E. Technologies Racing team heads to the USAC Weld Racing Silver Crown Series 54th Hoosier Hundred at the Indiana State Fairgrounds this Friday with one thing on their minds, winning.
"We have led at Indy before," said Coons. "I am overdue and the team is overdue for a Silver Crown™ win."
Jerry Coons Jr. has come close in the past few years finishing 2nd in 2001 with R.E Technologies Racing and 4th with another team in 2003.
This year, the qualifying format has been altered at the Hoosier Hundred. Cars will go out in sessions by groups. USAC will take the drivers fastest time of the session their qualifying time. The fastest 10 overall will run a secondary session to determine the top 10 starting positions in the 100-mile race.
Jerry Coons will pilot a J&J dirt Silver Crown™ car with a Gaerte Engine under the hood with Valvoline motor oil. The No. 35 will have new Sander Engineering wheels with Hoosier tires and Penske Racing shocks.
"I think everything from the car to the engine to the whole team is best that they have ever been," smiled Coons. "I feel like I have the best prepared racecar going into the Hoosier Hundred and I am not going to settle for anything but a win here."
It has been four months since the last USAC Weld Racing Silver Crown Series event. Jerry Coons Jr. and the R.E. Technologies Racing team has used the opportunity to try to get an edge on their competition. The team used the break in the action to prepare the J&J coil over dirt Silver Crown™ cars as well as the J&J pavement Silver Crown cars that Jerry Coons will drive this season. The R.E. Technologies Racing team made some tweaks to the cars that they believe will give them the edge on the track. They also ramped up the R.E. Technologies Driver Development Program putting Coons behind the wheel of a Mazada Spec Miata car in several SCCA road-racing events. As part of the program, the Tucson, Arizona native spent a week in intensive training at the Skip Barber Racing School at Daytona International Raceway driving a Formula Dodge R/T 2000 racecar geared with a sequential 5-speed transmission. Terry Earwood, the Skip Barber Driving School Chief Instructor who was instrumental in developing the Dodge/Skip Barber Driving School curriculum, said the R.E. Technologies hot shoe performed well.
"Jerry was awesome to work with and helped make the whole school progress a little faster." Jerry Coons Jr. also drove for Hoffman Auto Racing in the USAC Valvoline National Sprint Car Series finishing 4th at Eldora and 5th at the Raceway@Powercom Park.
COONS BUSY WEEKEND
In addition to the Hoosier Hundred, Jerry Coons Jr. is also scheduled to compete in the USAC National Midget Series Coca-Cola Night Before the 500 Saturday night at IRP. Coons will drive the No. 11 Mopar entry for Wilke-Pak Motorsports. On Sunday, Jerry Coons will head to Eldora to drive the No. 69x sprint car for Hoffman Auto Racing.
