J.J. Yeley raked in more than $70,000 in prize money in USAC Weld Racing Silver Crown Championship racing this past week, sweeping to back-to-back v]ictories in the "Kroger Pavement/Dirt Challenge" at Indianapolis Raceway Park and the Indiana State Fairgrounds, presented by the Dellen Automotive Family.

Yeley's victory in Thursday night's "Hoosier Twin 50s" at IRP was spectacular. Leading the event at its mid-way stoppage in the Ford/Power Stroke Diesel Beast/Ford co-owned by NASCAR Winston Cup Champ Tony Stewart and Bob East, Yeley rolled a die to determine an inversion for the second 50 laps and ended up starting fifth. He was running fourth with four laps remaining when a four-car accident brought out the yellow flag.

After the restart he caught Dave Darland and Brian Tyler, then passed leader Dave Steele in the final turn for the last-lap triumph!

Facing a possible $50,000 cash bonus posted by the race organizers for wins in both races, he proceeded to win the pole for Friday night's 51st "Hoosier Hundred" at the 1-mile dirt Indiana State Fairgrounds. From there he led all 100 miles of the race to win and claim the bonus. He was trailed at the finish by Rich Tobias, Jr., Paul White, Jerry Coons, Jr. and Tracy Hines.

Yeley emerged from the two races with a 24-point lead over Hines in the series standings going into the June 14 Terre Haute First National Bank "Sumar Classic" at the Terre Haute (Ind.) Action Track.

Only once previously had back-to-back Silver Crown races been staged on successive days. Mario Andretti won both, at Sedalia, Mo. and Springfield, Ill. in 1974.

Tyler Walker, Steele and Darland all led laps at IRP but only Darland appeared capable of challenging Yeley at the Fairgrounds, his bid ending with a blown tire on lap 84 while running second.
