Hines Wire-To-Wire At Gas City; Eldora Rained Out
Drake Leads Sprinters To Memphis Shootout
Tracy Hines of New Castle, Ind. led all 30 laps of Friday's opening event of "Border Wars X" at Gas City (Ind.) I-69 Speedway, opening defense of his mini-series title, but he'll have to wait until May 30 to put on the lid. Rain washed out Saturday night's race at the Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio and "Border Wars X" will now conclude at Eldora May 30.
Hines will be among drivers competing in this Friday night's "Big M Motorfest" opener at Memphis (Tenn.) Motorsports Park. The program on MMP's 1/ 4-mile dirt oval pits USAC drivers against stars of the O'Reilly Sprint Bandits, with a 30-lap feature on tap. The Midwest Ford Focus Midgets share the Friday "twinbill" with practice slated at 5:30 pm, qualifying at 6:30 and racing at 7:30.
Hines will aim for his fourth "Border Wars" title after putting his Kroger-Tide, Pringles/Bounty Twister/Gaerte in Gas City's victory lane. Trailing Hines at the checkered flag in Gas City were Shane Cottle, Shane Hollingsworth, series point leader Jay Drake and Levi Jones. John Wolfe was the fastest qualifier.
Drake leads Jones by 15 points in the series standings going into the Memphis event. In addition to Hines, they'll have to contend with top Sprint Bandit drivers, plus World of Outlaws Memphis-area legend Sammy Swindell.
Other local interest will center on Tennessee's Mike Ward, Texans Gary Wright and Travis Rilat, Oklahoma's Aaron Berryhill, Shane Stewart, Jerrod Wilson, Darren Stewart and Zach Chappell, Mississippi's Jay and Dale Howard, Arkansas' Sean Walden and Missouri's Jesse Hockett.
Friday night's race will mark the first time USAC Sprint cars have appeared in the Volunteer state since 1959 when Don Branson won at the Nashville Fairgrounds.
