Memphis, TN -- Hemelgarn 91/Johnson Motorsports will add a USAC Silver CrownTM car to their racing stable in 2004, team owners Ron Hemelgarn and Roger Johnson announced March 13.
Carl Edwards will pilot the No. 191 Hemelgarn 91/Johnson Motorsports entry at the Copper Classic in Phoenix and will carry the "Spirit of Knoxville" logo after the sprint car capital of the world, Knoxville, IA. The car will be supported out of the R.E. Technologies race shop in Memphis, TN.
"It's exciting to have a proven winner like Carl in the car," Hemelgarn said. "He's just coming off his Nascar Truck Series win. My hope is that Carl will do his famous standing back flip after the race in Phoenix."
Edwards, 24, is known for his back flip on the start/finish line after a victory.
The partnership of veteran team owners Hemelgarn and Johnson was formed in 2002 with a two-car effort in the Menards Infiniti Pro Series. Sharing a common interest in promoting grass roots open wheel racing, Hemelgarn and Johnson wanted to provide a stepping stone for USAC drivers and sponsors into the Indy Racing League.
"Ron and I have been kicking this idea around since we met in 2000 at the Indy 500", said Johnson. "I am happy to be fielding the purple and white with Carl at the wheel. He has a remarkable personality and a won't quit attitude. I am glad he was available for this race".
Hemelgarn, owner of the 2000 Indy Racing League Championship team, is well known for his support of USAC and his annual USAC Sprint Car show at Toledo Speedway. Team owner Johnson fields the No. 35 USAC Silver CrownTM entry for Boston Reid and is behind the Big "M" Motorfest bringing USAC racing back to Memphis on May 7 & 8.
The team will make their Silver Crown debut in the 2004 season opener at Phoenix International Raceway March 19-21. During the same weekend, the team will compete in the Menards Infiniti Pro Series event with driver Paul Dana behind the wheel.
