FOCUSES RETURN TO IRWINDALE SATURDAY
HARRIS, SCOTT SCORE FOCUS VICTORIES IN CALIFORNIA, VIRGINIA
The USAC California Ford Focus Midgets return to Irwindale Speedway this Saturday and Alex Harris will be trying to record back-to-back victories in the scheduled 30-lap feature.
Harris, of Simi Valley, Calif., won Saturday night's 35-lap pavement series feature event at the 1/3-mile Irwindale oval. The two-time USAC TQ Midget Champion trailed lady driver Audra Sasselli for the first seven laps, then led the last 28 to beat Sasselli, Darrell Herzog, Steve Davis and Chase Barber. Harris was also the fastest of 20 qualifiers.
Sasselli emerged as the new series point leader going into this Saturday's race at Irwindale.
Defending USAC Carolina/Virginia Ford Focus Midget Champion Chase Scott of Concord, N.C. scored a sensational last-lap victory in Saturday afternoon's series opener at the South Boston (Va.) Speedway.
Scott trailed Robbie Ray for 24 laps but took advantage on traffic in the final turn of the 25th and final lap and narrowly beat Ray to the checkered flag. Scott, who won nine races enroute to the 2004 title, recorded his fifth consecutive win and his sixth in seven starts at the 4/10-mile paved oval. He piloted the Real Race Cars Beast.
Trailing fast qualifier Scott and Ray at the finish were Brit Andersen, Aron Oakley and Nick Wean. The Carolina/Virginia series continues April 23 at the South Boston oval.
