Indiana Champ Ray Headed For Hickory Saturday

Robbie Ray of Davenport, Iowa, who is expected to defend his USAC Midwest Ford Focus Midget Car Championship in 2004, is heading for North Carolina this weekend to compete in the opening race in USAC's brand-new Carolina/Virginia Ford Focus Midget Car Series, which is presented by Calico Coatings.

The "Afordablespeed.com Twin 20s" at the .363-mile paved Hickory Motor Speedway opens a 19-race campaign which actually includes events in North and South Carolina and Virginia, plus special events in Ohio, Kentucky and Kansas!

The races are USAC's first at Hickory, which also hosts a September 6 date.

Two 20-lap feature events are planned and Ray is expected to be among top threats for victory in the series openers. He won five times during 2003 and finished worse than sixth only once in 17 outings on his way to the Indiana Ford Focus Midget title.

Ray will compete at Hickory in a car fielded by legendary USAC Midget participants Don and Mel Kenyon, who will also field a car at Hickory for Mel's son Brice. Brice finished sixth in last year's Indiana standings and recorded a dozen "top-10" finishes but is still seeking his initial USAC feature victory.
