Rain places Duquoin under the lights Saturday!
The "Ted Horn 100" at the DuQuoin (Ill.) State Fairgrounds this Saturday night (September 6) marks the first time ever that USAC's Weld Racing Silver Crown Championship Cars have competed on the Miracle Mile "under the lights." The event was postponed Sunday by rain and has been rescheduled for Saturday night, practice beginning at 5:30, qualifying at 6:30, racing at 7:45 and the 100-mile feature event at 8:30 pm.
J.J. Yeley of Phoenix, Ariz. is the current series point leader and defending race winner of the event honoring the late three-time AAA National Racing Champion who lost his life at DuQuoin in 1948. Other former race winners expected to compete include Paul White (2001), Tony Elliott (1999), Russ Gamester (1997) and Johnny Parsons (1992 & 1995).
Yeley holds a 19-point lead over Dave Steele and 33-point lead over Dave Darland going into Saturday's event, which has 66 total points available. Modified racing accompanies Saturday night's DuQuoin activities.
Although Saturday's USAC Silver Crown race is not the first on a mile under the lights it is the first at the storied DuQuoin oval which has hosted Championship open-wheel racing since 1948! Other tracks at least a mile in length which have hosted USAC Championship Cars under the lights include Nazareth (PA) National Speedway, the Indiana State Fairgrounds in Indianapolis and the California State Fairgrounds in Sacramento.
