"LOU VERMEIL CLASSIC" RETURNS TO CALISTOGA THIS WEEKEND

The "Lou Vermeil Classic" returns to the Calistoga Fairgrounds Speedway in California this weekend, showcasing the USAC National and Lucas Oil CRA Sprint cars and USAC Western Midgets in "doubleheaders" both Saturday and Sunday nights.

David Cardey of Perris, Calif. leads the Lucas Oil USAC/CRA Sprint standings into these two important events, only 20 points ahead of runner-up Garrett Hansen and 28 ahead of Blake Miller and defending titlist Mike Spencer.

This weekend's events are also listed as National Sprint "special events" and are expected to draw the top non-winged Sprint car drivers from across America to the picturesque wine country half-mile oval.

Tim Kaeding and Kevin Swindell are the defending Calistoga Sprint race winners but a host of drivers are expected to be among favorites for this year's feature victories.

In typical USAC/CRA style, 10 different winners have emerged from the 11 races held this season. Only Cardey, with wins at Perris and Petaluma, has been able to repeat.
