Charlotte, NC (July 24, 1998) - Tony Stewart won the richest midget race in history tonight on the quarter-mile oval at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Stewart took home the $9,000 winner's share of tonight's $51,000 purse.
Stewart was slated to start fifth in tonight's 50 lap feature but was moved to the inside of row two when polesitter Brian Gerster reported to the pits prior to the start.
At the drop of the green Stewart immediately went to the front, taking the lead off turn two. Stewart led the first lap by four car lengths on his way to his flag to flag victory.
With Stewart running unchallenged at the front, all the racing was well behind him. A fierce battle for third between Jimmy McCune and Ryan Newman was promoted to a battle for second when Jason Leffler spun from a comfortable second place position. With four laps to go, Newman passed McCune for second.
Ricky Shelton looked join the continuing battle between Newman and McCune late in the race but a spin with three laps to go dropped Shelton to 14th in the final order.
