Sprint Car Driver Casey Diemert Fatally Injured

IRWINDALE, Calif., March 27, 1999 -- United States Auto Club sprint car driver Casey Diemert of Roseburg, Ore. succumbed to injuries received in a practice accident at Irwindale Speedway.

The Irwindale Speedway fire and rescue crew responded to the crash in a timely manner and all track emergency systems worked as planned. The track personnel were aided by the L.A. County Fire Department.

Diemert was transported by Life Flite helicopter to Arcadia Methodist Hospital where, despite the best efforts of the hospital staff, the 23-year-old driver expired of his injuries at 2:52 p.m. local time.

"Our sympathies go out to his family," Ray Wilkings, president and C.O.O. of Irwindale Speedway said.
