Sprint leader Hines set for Ohio's "Buckeye Nationals"
Stoops Freightliner Sprint Car Series point leader Tracy Hines is looking forward to this week's "Buckeye Nationals" events in Ohio as a stepping stone to what would be his initial USAC Sprint Car Championship. Tracy's first USAC title came in the Silver Crown Championship Series in 2000.
Hines leads runner-up Derek Davidson by 66 points going into Wednesday night's "Buckeye Nationals" opener at Attica Raceway Park in Attica, Ohio, the first of four consecutive "doubleheaders" featuring the Stoops Freightliner Sprint Cars and USAC National Midget Cars. A 30-lap feature for each series is scheduled at each track, with the exception of the Saturday, June 22 finale at Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio where the Midget feature is 25 laps.
Thursday night's "Buckeye Nationals" events are at the New Fremont Speedway and Friday night's races are at Limaland Motorsports Park in Lima. All four events begin with practice at 6 pm, qualifying at 6:30 and racing at 7:30.
Hines is one of three drivers who have been victorious on the dirt in Stoops Freightliner action this season. He won at Haubstadt, Ind. May 19 and has already racked up record career wins #51, 52 and 53 for his car owners, Dynamics, Inc. of Milford, Ohio. Jon Stanbrough won May 11 at Terre Haute, Ind. and J.J. Yeley won May 26 at Eldora.
Yeley, who climbed the fence at Eldora after his May victory, ala Helio Castroneves, is the only driver to "sweep" a USAC doubleheader this season, winning both the Sprint and Midget features at Cedar Rapids, Iowa May 3.
Approximately $100,000 in total prize money is up for grabs in this week's "Buckeye Nationals," not to mention the 72 points available in the race for the 2002 Earl's 350 Fast Qualifier Championship, which is worth an additional $20,000 cash bonus to the champion at season's end.
ESPN2 will broadcast Saturday night's Eldora "doubleheader" on Sunday night, June 30 from 6-8 pm ET.
