Up-and-Down Weekend for East at Iowa and Belleville
Brownsburg, Ind. (August 4, 2009) -- Bobby East had fast three fast racecars at two different tracks and two different surfaces, but had mixed results as all three national USAC divisions were in competition at Iowa Speedway and the Belleville (Kan.) Highbanks.
East's racing weekend started on Thursday night at Belleville with a 20-lap "all-star shootout". Although he qualified fifth in the Klatt Enterprises No. 4 Ford Racing Technology/Beast Chassis/ClubSport Beast Ford, East was dominant in the feature leading the first 18 laps. Unfortunately, East encountered engine problems on lap 19 and dropped to ninth place at the finish.
On Friday, East qualified fourth in the Klatt Enterprises No. 6 Ford Racing Technology/Beast Chassis/ClubSport Beast Ford and finished fourth in Silver Crown action at the 7/8-mile Iowa Speedway, his second consecutive top-five run in the big cars. Although East did not compete in the dirt track races to open the Silver Crown season, East now sits third in the season standings. Also at Iowa, East qualified the Klatt No. 5 Ford Racing Technology/Beast Chassis/ClubSport Beast Ford sprint car ninth and raced it to a sixth-place finish in the 50-lap feature.
East returned to Belleville on Saturday for the 40-lap Belleville Nationals finale. After swapping out engines, East could only battle to a tenth-place finish in the feature.
"It was a busy weekend for sure," East said. "I like going to Iowa and I love Belleville so we were looking forward to some good results. Unfortunately we had some bad luck at Belleville on Thursday and that seemed to set the tone for the rest of the weekend. We had great cars all weekend but we just couldn't seem to get up there. Right now we're all about getting wins, whether it's in the Silver Crown car, the Sprint car, or the Midget. We're not really looking at the points in any of the series, all that matters is wins. We almost had one on Thursday night but we had some problems with the engine. We just couldn't get in position to fight for the win in either car up in Iowa. It's disappointing because we've had great cars and then run into some bad luck. I guess it's just our year to deal with a little bad luck. The positive side of it is the cars are great and everyone on the team is doing everything possible to get us into the winner's circle. Once we get this little streak of bad luck behind us we're going to start clicking off win after win."
East stays sixth in the USAC National Midget Car Series points, 161 points behind leader Brad Kuhn. East will compete in Thursday's Silver Crown 100-lapper at Oswego Speedway followed by the Joe James/Pat O'Connor Classic at Salem Speedway on August 15.
Beast Note: Cameron Dodson returned to Victory Lane in USAC Silver Crown action at Iowa Speedway after suffering serious injuries in a road accident last November. In doing so, Dodson won at Iowa Speedway for the second consecutive year aboard NASCAR driver Carl Edwards' Ford-powered Beast chassis.
