Bliss Eyes USAC Record For Hoffman At South Boston
Mike Bliss of Milwaukie, Ore. will replace Brian Tyler in the famed Kroger/Folgers/Pringles/Sunny Delight Gaerte/Beast for this Saturday night's "USAC 200" Sprint car race at Big Daddy's South Boston Speedway in Virginia.
Team owner Dick Hoffman selected Bliss after Tyler confirmed his participation in this weekend's NASCAR Busch Series event at Memphis, Tenn. Bliss will be trying to nail down the team's 51st career USAC feature win, which would tie them for the all-time USAC car owner lead with Steve Stapp.
Bliss is a 14-year veteran of USAC competition with eight career wins in the Stoops Freightliner Sprint Car Series. He last competed in the Sprint cars at Salem, Ind. in April of 1995. He scored his initial USAC Sprint win in 1993 and added seven more in 1994. All eight wins have come on the pavement.
In addition, Bliss owns eight victories in the USAC Silver Crown cars and five in the USAC Midgets. He was the 1993 USAC Silver Crown Champion and finished third in the USAC Midget Series in 1994.
Bliss has competed in five USAC Silver Crown races this season and won the May 12 "Coca-Cola 100" at Indianapolis Raceway Park. He also has participated in some NASCAR Craftsman Truck and Busch Series races in 2001.
"I ran the truck at South Boston two weeks ago and was thinking this would be a cool Sprint/Midget track," admits Bliss. He got as high as second in the truck race, spun, then came back to finish ninth. "I'm anxious to run the Sprinter there," he says.
Saturday night's "USAC 200" features both the Stoops Freightliner Sprint Cars and WorldCom National Midget Cars. NASCAR star Tony Stewart will compete in the Midget car portion of the program.
Practice is slated to start at 4 pm, with qualifying at 4:45 and racing at 7:30. A 50-lap feature is on tap for each series at the 4/10-mile paved oval.
