Jeff Bloom of Bangor, Mich. will start Saturday night's Pay Less/Delco Remy "Little 500" USAC Sprint Car race from the pole starting position after turning the fastest one and four-lap qualification times during Thursday's pole qualifying session at the 1/4-mile paved Anderson (Ind.) Speedway.

Eight times a front-row starter in the May classic, Bloom's pole is his first ever and comes in his historic 25th start, a race record!

Bloom and his Roberts Steel Erection/Allen Trailer Sales/AJ's Chicken Chalet/Swanson Engines/Beebe Signs Hogue Dynamite qualified at 78.818 mph, with a four-lap time of 45.675 seconds. His fastest lap was an 11.313 (79.455 mph).

"It's about time," said Bloom after the run. "This kind of makes my Little 500 career complete. I knew the car was good yesterday during practice." Bloom, a three-time Little 500 winner (1972, 1977 and 1991), will be making his first racing start of the 2001 season.

Joining Bloom on the front row Saturday night are USAC regulars Eric Gordon of Indianapolis, Ind. and Dave Steele of Tampa, Fla. "I'm just sick," exclaimed Gordon, who made three attempts before settling for the number two spot. "I have nobody to blame but myself." Gordon actually turned in four laps faster than Bloom's fastest lap during his first two attempts but failed to finish each of those runs.

Thirty-eight of the 46 entered cars qualified Thursday, locking in the "top-15" positions, and the final 18 starting spots will be finalized during final qualifying Friday.
