Tony Hunt makes "Little 500" debut May 25 at Anderson.

Defending USAC Western Sprint Car Champion Tony Hunt of Fair Oaks, Calif. hopes to make his "Little 500" Sprint Car debut in the May 25 classic at the Anderson (Ind.) Speedway.

Hunt's title last year was his second in USAC racing, having dominated the 1992 Russell Pro Series. He will pilot Ken Pierson's Chevy/Beast in the 54th running of the PayLess/Delco Remy "Little 500," pending qualifications set for Thursday and Friday May 23-24 at the 1/4-mile paved oval.

Hunt has tasted victory in USAC Sprint car competition the past two weekends, winning at Madera, Calif. May 4 and Carson City, Nev. May 11. Those wins left him leading the new USAC Western Regional Sprint Car Series standings and second in the Western Sprint Car points.

He also plans to compete in next Wednesday night's 50-lap USAC Stoops Freightliner Sprint Car race at Anderson.

The "Little 500" continues a tradition begun in 1949 which has included victories by some of the greatest names in the sport, including USAC Sprint Car Champions Rollie Beale, Greg Leffler and Larry Dickson. Eric Gordon will seek his fourth victory in the race after winning again last year. That would tie him with Tom Cherry and Bob Frey for the most wins in race history. Jim Childers, Darl Harrison and 2001 pole starter Jeff Bloom also have three career wins in the classic.

The 500-lap Sprint car classic gets the green flag at 8 pm on Saturday, May 25.
