Salinas, Calif. – In a relatively uneventful two hour and forty-minute race at Laguna Seca in Salinas, California, the pair of red Ferrari 458 Italias finished just off the podium in what would prove to be a strong championship points day for both Risi Competizione and Scuderia Corsa.
A fourth place finish by Giancarlo Fisichella and Pierre Kaffer in the no. 62 Risi Competizione Ferrari 458 Italia allowed them to close the gap in the GT-LeMans driver championship. Fast pit work by the Risi Competizione team allowed Fisichella to lead the race briefly in the first hour, and with the race going caution free throughout the second half, Kaffer would take the checkered flag in fourth position.
Risi Competizione wins DEKRA Green Challenge
For the third time in a row, Risi Competizione claimed the DEKRA Green Challenge Award which is given to the most environmentally clean, fast, and efficient GT-LeMans competitor in each United SportsCar Championship race. Kaffer also set the fastest lap of the GT-LeMans class. With the result, Fisichella and Kaffer are fourth in the driver’s championship but a mere ten points out of the championship lead.
Scuderia Corsa drivers move within one point of championship lead
For Scuderia Corsa, which had drivers Townsend Bell and Bill Sweedler competing in front of a large crowd of supporters from Ferrari Silicon Valley, pit stops and strategy enabled the no. 63 Scuderia Corsa Ferrari 458 Italia to jump into contention for a podium result. Stuck in traffic from the drop of the green flag, a fast pit stop by the team enabled Sweedler to jump up to the lead before Bell took the car over. The long green flag run to the checkered would see Bell fnish in fourth position in the GT-Daytona class.
Bell and Sweedler are now second in the GT-Daytona drivers championship while Ferrari is also second in the GT-Daytona manufacturer’s championship.
The next round of the United SportsCar Championship will be May 29-30 at The Raceway at Belle Isle in Detroit, Michigan.
