DeltaWing in top class for 2014 United SportsCar Racing debut
United SportsCar Racing series will include DeltaWing alongside DP, P2.
SEBRING, FL. – The revolutionary DeltaWing has been accepted for inclusion within the top prototype class of the unified United SportsCar Racing series.
The new series name for the amalgamation of the American Le Mans Series presented by Tequila Patrón and the GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series was revealed Thursday at the Chateau Élan ballroom at Sebring International Raceway.
The DeltaWing makes its debut within the ALMS LMP1 class this weekend with its open-top version, now powered by an Élan engine.
For Dr. Don Panoz, founder of the American Le Mans Series and managing partner of DeltaWing Racing Cars, seeing the DeltaWing in the top class is the justification for new and emerging technology in the unified championship.
“It means there is new technology embraced and accepted to race alongside the current cars,” said Panoz. “It will be a great platform to compare what the DeltaWing is doing against everyone else. For the fans, it will be great to see three different types of cars racing in one class.”
Panoz noted the importance of having a simplified, streamlined name for the 2014 sports car championship.
“It means, this is what we’ve done,” he said. “We’re all working together on this process to create the best of both worlds. We’re unified, and that is reflected in the name.”
Panoz will serve on the board of directors of United SportsCar Racing. GRAND-AM President and CEO Ed Bennett, ALMS President and CEO Scott Atherton, and SME Branding Senior Partner Ed O’Hara presented the series branding, logo and class announcement.
IMSA (International Motor Sports Association) has a new logo as well, and will serve as the sanctioning body for the merged series. IMSA is the sanctioning body of the ALMS, and was co-founded in 1969 by John Bishop and the late Bill France, Sr.
