The Daytona Prototype teams that make up the TUDOR United SportsCar Championship have been invited to a Riley test at Daytona next week, in an important test after a brutal first showing last month that saw two Corvette Daytona Prototypes get airborne after a tire failure.
After those incidents, all prototype cars were sent packing early from the two-day session.
This test will be looking at the changes to the tire and aerodynamics made by Continental Tire and IMSA to correct the problem seen last month.
Continental Tire is reported to be bringing a new, updated tire that is reinforced to combat the higher downforce seen on the DPs so far.
IMSA has been reluctant to discuss the matter, and with only 59 days remaining until the Rolex 24, team officials are coming forward with concerns of their own.
“We’re still waiting for (IMSA) to come out with a definitive outline of all the findings from the tire failure and the cars flying. It’s certainly something they need to come back with. Because of the rules and everything being so late, we can’t go testing until mid-month at the earliest,” Wayne Taylor told John Dagys with SportsCar365.
One team owner says he thinks that trimming the car out, which would lower the downforce, which in turn lessens the load on the tires, is an option to combat the problem.
“I think Continental is doing a good job and is working their butt off, but we waited too long to get all these pieces and parts on our cars to find out,” said Spirit of Daytona owner Troy Flis.
“I think (IMSA is) putting every effort in right now on getting the package that everybody can move forward with. It’s just time. There’s a lot of unknowns still.”
