Bowmanville, Ontario -- Paul Gentilozzi turned a lap of 1:20.510 (109.954 mph) to secure the pole for the Trans-Am Series 125 this morning at Mosport International Raceway. For Gentilozzi, in the #3 Johnson Controls HomeLink Jaguar XKR, it was his second consecutive pole. He was the polesitter prior to Round Two of the BFGoodrich Tires Cup at Long Beach, Calif.
Gentilozzi's fast lap came during his 10th lap of the first qualifying session. The pole is the 27th of his illustrious Trans-Am Series career and 95th career appearance in the Fast Five. By winning the Motorcity True Performance Award Pole Award, Gentilozzi secures a $2,500 cash bonus.
"I was actually being very careful out there," said Gentilozzi. "A car in the previous session oiled the track pretty heavily in the last three turns. I think there was more in the car, but it just wasn't worth taking the chance."
"The track is so much smoother that it's easier to be more brave and stupid. Before, there used to be just one line. Now, there are multiple lines and several places to pass."
Following Gentilozzi, was the two-time defending Mosport champion, Brian Simo. Simo, in the #88 Tommy Bahama Qvale Mangusta, is making his second Fast Five appearance of the 2001 season, and 53rd of his career. Simo's last victory came here at Mosport last May.
Tommy Archer (#36 Motorcity True Performance Dodge Viper) makes his first appearance in the Fast Five this season. For Archer, the 1992 Trans-Am Series Rookie of the Year, this is his 18th career appearance in the Fast Five.
Rounding out the Fast Five were Lou Gigliotti (#28 LG Motorsports G2 Performance Chevrolet Corvette) and Tomy Drissi (#15 TDM Motorsports Jaguar XKR). Gigliotti, who won round two of the BFGoodrich Tires Cup at Long Beach, Calif., is making his second appearance in the Fast Five this season. Drissi was last in the Fast Five at Laguna Seca in mid-October.
Round three of the BFGoodrich Tires Cup, the Trans-Am Series 125, will begin at 1:00 tomorrow afternoon. The race will be televised live by Speedvision and is the first of three mandatory pit stop races that the Trans-Am Series will run this season.
