LONG BEACH, Calif.(April 17, 1999)–Chris Neville, of Scottsdale, Ariz., scored his first career pole for the Johnson Controls 100 BFGoodrich Tires Trans-Am Series race, the 1999 season-opener at the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach. Neville, driving the No. 84 ARCO Ford Mustang Cobra, posted a top time of 1:14.392 (88.267 mph). "We tried to get a fast lap down early in the session, but I made a bonehead move and it didn't happen," said Neville. "But then the team regrouped and we made it happen. The Huffaker chassis is incredible. It may be intimidating to start in front of some of these guys, but our goals are high for this race–we want to win, and I think we can do it." Qualifying second, and looking for his third-consecutive Trans-Am win (dating back to the final two races of 1998) was Brian Simo, in the No. 2 Valvoline Mustang Cobra. "When you miss track time, as we did yesterday, it always hurts you for qualifying, but we were able to lay a quick lap down early," said Simo. "I actually thought I was done for the day, but Chris timed his session perfectly. We tried to go back out, but it wasn't enough. The race is always a whole different game." Defending Long Beach race winner and 1998 Trans-Am Drivers' Champion Paul Gentilozzi, driving the No. 1 Johnson Controls/HomeLink Mustang Cobra, qualified third, followed by Mike Lewis, in the No. 12 AmeriSuites Mustang Cobra, and Johnny Miller IV, in the No. 64 Automationdirect.com/Hitachi Chevrolet Camaro. The Johnson Controls 100 begins at 6:45 p.m. (EDT) and will be televised on The Nashville Network on Monday April 19, at 12:00 a.m. (EDT).
