Brian Simo of Carlsbad, Calif., will start from the pole position for Sunday's BFGoodrich Tires Trans-Am Series season finale at the San Diego Grand Prix. Simo earned his fourth pole of the season and 14th career Trans-Am pole position with a time of one minute 8.274 seconds on the 1.65-mile street circuit. His qualifying time was more than three-tenths of a second faster than second-place qualifier Stu Hayner of Yorba Linda, Calif.
Simo is chasing his first Trans-Am championship, trailing series leader Paul Gentilozzi of Lansing, Mich., by 15 points.
"We came in with obviously high expectations because we didn't have a choice," Simo said. "We're still in the championship battle, although there's a big points disparity. Getting the pole is just one of four steps we have to take this weekend. We still need to lead the race, lead the most laps and win the race."
