(October 15, 2000) Leighton Reese (Minnetonka, MN) and the Banner Racing team headed for the hills on the famed Laguna Seca Raceway, stationed on the beautiful Monterey Peninsula. "There is something awe-inspiring about this part of California," said Leighton. "This is definitely a drivers track with lots of fast turns. It has some very scary corners and is much like Mosport in that respect."
Qualifying Saturday saw Reese and the #66 Banner Engineering/Phillips 66 entry place 10th on the starting grid. "There are lots of fast drivers out here this weekend," Leighton said. "New drivers, Kenny Wilden (Derhaag/YO Ranch Camaro), Boris Said (ACS Express Mustang), and Tom Miller (Soenen/Moosedrool Moostang) have been added to the usual field, and I expect Mike Lewis and John Miller to be really tough here as well." And let's not forget that this race is sort of a homecoming for Randy Ruhlman. There have been four different manufacturers in the winners circle this season and Miller and/or Ruhlman could certainly make it five."
With only 2 cautions in the 45 lap race around the 2.238 mile circuit, Reese made it as high as 7th place, but ran into some traffic that wasn't so kind. Contact was made between the #28 car of Lou Gigliotti and the #66, causing serious tow-out on the Banner car. This forced Leighton to drop back to the 10th spot, to which he would be able to hold on to for the remainder of the race.
The 10th place finish today moves Leighton Reese up to 4th in the BFGoodrich Tires Trans-Am Driver's points standings. The top five driver's points are as follows: Gentilozzi, 247; Simo, 218; Jeff Altenburg, 168; Leighton Reese, 154; and Chris Neville, 151.
