(October 29, 2000) After surviving a first lap tap from the #12 AmeriSuites car of Mike Lewis, Leighton Reese (Minnetonka, MN) managed to bring home a top ten finish in Round 11 of the BFGoodrich Tires Trans-Am Series. The tap Leighton received in turn 7 of lap 1 moved the #66 Banner Racing Pontiac Grand Prix to the very back of the field.
The rain had just begun as the green flag dropped, causing the track conditions to deteriorate quickly. "We made up a lot of positions after the spin," stated Reese, "we were back at the end of the field on lap 1, that hurt us. Then when the rain started getting heavier, that made things all the worse. We had a great car in the dry. It was handling so well, but when the rain got harder, our car got more difficult to drive then others."
Reese took the Banner Racing/Phillips 66 Grand Prix up to 11th position about midway through the race. On lap 27, all cars were black flagged to come in and change to rain tires. When the cars went back out to the track, only 10 minutes were left in the race. With the BFGoodrich rain tires, Leighton took the Banner Engineering entry to a very respectable 10th place for the checkered flag. "It was a tough 10th place, we had to work hard for this one," Reese said.
Going into the final round, round 12, of the season, Paul Gentilozzi leads Brian Simo in the Drivers Points standings 248 to 232, followed by Jeff Altenburg (189), Leighton Reese (171) and Chris Neville (157) round out the top-five.
